     Roman Clothing

If you travel in Rome, you for sure had chance to see American tourists wearing togas walking around in a very good mood, probably supported not only by wearing historical clothes, but by vine. If some of the girls knew what it means for woman to wear toga in the Roman times, they will immediately change clothes.

Romans togas –piece of wool fabric, was common roman clothing mostly for the men. Women had worn togas during short period in the early years of history of Ancient Rome. The only women who wore togas in the middle of the Republican era were streetwalker prostitutes. Togas for woman were a symbol of disgrace. Oppositely, for man it was an honor to wear togas and they were wore togas for public occasions. Different colors of togas showed the social position of the person.

It was difficult to do something active in the toga.  Specially trained servants helped to the men to wear togas and to drape them over the body correctly. Also Romans were complaining that it is very cold clothiers. During the Roman history togas didn`t change dramatically, but the way of wearing was different. Togas were draped in a more and more complicate way during the history.

In 200 BC Romans took an idea to wear linen tunics from Egyptian and Greek people. Men and women wore tunics. They were clothes with minimum sewn labor. Tunics were made by two rectangular pieces connected with each other on the sides, fastened by pins on the shoulders and tightened by belt on the waist. Even with such small space, woman found the way for creativity and used different colors, draping and belting to be fashionable.

Later tunics became more common clothing and togas were wearing more seldom. Tunics were designed variously and had different names - peplos, chiton (similar with Greek) and stola, tunica for the married woman. Stola supposes to be worn over other tunica and that hided all figure, including feet. Woman with high status were wearied a long clock –palla. Also silk clothes were only for the upper class people, as well as border on the toga and it`s color, broad stripes on the tunic, colored shoes for men.

Roman Generals were wearing uniform -armor, helmet and cloak. The armors were made with metal chain mail, and different armors were made from leather and metal. Some of them had metal plates on the front and other opposite, leather on the front and metal on the inside. It is different, what we use to see in the movies, when roman soldiers shine with metal arbors. Probably, the real Roman army armor of didn`t shine.

It is interesting to note, that during exercising Romans wore something similar with modern swimming suites. For women it was “bikini”-looking clothing. In that look they appear in the athletic competitions and exercising.

In the modern fashion industry roman style often appears on the run shows. “Roman goddess look” is also popular in the modern bridal industry.
